A fantastic 86 quality entries have been received for the £150,000 John Smith’s Northumberland Plate which takes place at Newcastle Racecourse on Saturday 29th June forming the feature of the 3 day Betfred Northumberland Plate Festival with a total prize fund of just over £270,000.

Among the early closing entries, the Irish contingent includes five from the Aiden O’Brien stable and two from Dermot Weld.

There is no shortage of National Hunt trainers aiming to send horses for the stamina testing feature and they include Donald McCain, Jonjo O’Neill, Nicky Henderson, Phillip Hobbs, Alan King and David Pipe.

The two last winners of the Northumberland Plate are both entered for the 2013 contest, Ile De Re who ran to victory for Donald McCain last year and Tominator, winner in 2011.

Interesting entries include Junior, winner of the Rehearsal Chase (Listed) at Newcastle for David Pipe in November and this year’s Chester Cup winner – Address Unknown trained by Richard Fahey and owned by Dr Marwan Koukash.

Godolphin have seven entries, John Gosden is looking to run Tempus Fugit and Mawaqeet represents Sir Michael Stoute.

David Williamson Executive Director at Newcastle expressed his delight at the entries saying, “It looks like a really healthy line up with plenty of quality from top yards across the country and a pleasing amount of Irish entries. The maximum is for 20 horses which we normally get and we have 2 reserves. It’s early to say yet but it’s always a really competitive field which provides a really exciting climax to our 3 day Festival. We always attract a massive crowd of around 20,000 on Plate day, and this year with Madness playing on the Friday evening after racing, I think we’ll have a fantastic atmosphere over the entire Betfred sponsored festival”.
