Capri and Crystal Ocean joint favourites with the sponsors
Forty-three remain in the Howcroft Industrial Supplies Champagne Stakes
Following the latest round of entries, a total of 24 horses remain in contention for the William Hill St Leger Stakes.
The world’s oldest Classic will be run on Saturday 16 September at Doncaster Racecourse with a total prize fund of £700,000.
The sponsors, William Hill, make Aidan O’Brien’s CAPRI and Sir Michael Stoute’s CRYSTAL OCEAN, recent winner of the Qatar Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, joint favourites for the race at 4/1. O’Brien is responsible for twelve horses that remain entered for the race.
From seven initial entries, four time St Leger winner, John Gosden, has two horses remaining in the race in STRADIVARIUS (9/2) and CORONET (8/1). Following his win in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury, Roger Varian’s DEFOE has been priced at 7/1 by the sponsors to take the Town Moor race.
A win for Joseph O’Brien’s first runner REKINDLING (10/1) would see him become the first person to both ride and train a winner of the world’s oldest Classic since Harry Wragg completed the feat in 1969.
Final declarations, as well as the deadline for any supplementary entries, for the William Hill St Leger will be made on Monday 11 September 2017.
In addition to the William Hill St Leger Stakes, a total of 43 horses remain in the Howcroft Industrial Supplies Champagne Stakes. The Group 2 race for three-year-old colts and geldings is run over seven furlongs and the entries include Aidan O’Brien’s GUSTAV KLIMT and Royal Ascot winner RAJASINGHE, owned by Rebel Racing and trained by Richard Spencer.
William Hill spokesman, Rupert Adams said : “We are very pleased with the entries, clearly it is a very strong and open field. Capri has been the long-term favourite but Crystal Ocean has been very well backed since winning at Goodwood and we cannot split the two”
