Newcastle Racecourse is delighted to announce Stobart Rail as the new sponsor for the Northumberland Plate in 2017 and 2018.
This year’s Stobart Rail Northumberland Plate will be run on Saturday 1 July and is worth £150,000. The remainder of the races across the Northumberland Plate Festival, including the £75,000 Northumberland Vase, will continue to be sponsored by Betfred.
Stobart was central to the development of the all-weather track at Newcastle Racecourse and is a significant supporter of British Racing, most notably of the Professional Jockeys Association’s Career Ending Insurance Scheme and the Flat and Jump Jockeys’ Championships.
The Northumberland Plate carries great history, having been a feature in the Newcastle Racecourse calendar for 135 years. Formerly known as the ‘Pitmen’s Derby’, the race has long attracted some of the best two mile horses in the country, and is one of the richest two mile handicaps in the world.
Kirk Taylor, Managing Director of Stobart Rail, said: “Stobart Rail is delighted to be associated with Newcastle Racecourse, especially since we designed and constructed the new all-weather track. Combine this with the fact The Northumberland Plate is a unique race with national reach, it represents a perfect partnership for Stobart Rail and our national ambitions.”
David Williamson, Executive Director of Newcastle Racecourse, said “As long term supporters of British Racing, and an integral part of the project team that delivered the world class all-weather track at Newcastle, we are really pleased to be working with Stobart Rail. As our most high profile flat race the Northumberland Plate is always an exciting race and we can look forward to an exciting renewal in 2017.”
