In May 2014 Arena Racing Company (“ARC”) announced plans to improve the racing surface at Great Yarmouth by levelling the home straight.

This work has been successfully carried out over the winter and it is currently proposed that racing will recommence on Thursday 23 July. This is a month later than initially proposed due to the new turf cover needing some additional growing time in order to be safe for racing. The additional month will allow the sward to thicken providing a suitable cushion for racing, while the roots develop further for sustained growth and post racing recovery. Local trainers will be invited to bring horses to work on the track ahead of the first race meeting in order to establish that the track is fair and safe.

In consultation with the British Horseracing Authority (“BHA”) the previous four fixtures due to be hosted at Great Yarmouth will be transferred to the following racecourses:
· 26 June: Wolverhampton
· 2 July: Lingfield Park (All Weather)
· 8 July: Wolverhampton
· 14 July: Lingfield (All Weather)

Jim Allen, ARC Racing Director, said: “We are committed to ensuring each of our racecourses provides the best possible conditions for horses to race on, be that a synthetic racing surface or turf. We are excited about recommencing racing at Great Yarmouth, however we can only do so when we are confident that the racing surface is absolutely safe for horses and jockeys. We appreciate horsemen’s and racegoers’ patience in this situation and will keep everyone updated as necessary.”

All racegoers who have booked a ticket for any of the four fixtures being moved can transfer to another date or claim a full cash refund.

Glenn Tubby, Great Yarmouth Executive Director, said: “The team at Great Yarmouth will be in contact with those people who had already booked to attend one of the four fixtures now being transferred, as well as our much valued sponsors and Annual Members.

“We are very much open for business, continuing to host a number of non-racing events every week, and look forward to racing returning to the track in July. Our popular Ladies’ Night will now be on Thursday 13 August and our Ladies’ Day remains on Thursday 17 September as part of the three-day Eastern Festival race meeting.”
